Optical Time Domain Reflector (OTDR) An Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) is a fiber optic instrument that helps engineers and technicians assess the health of fiber optic cables. It works by sending a pulse of light into the fiber at a known time and then analyzing the light that is reflected back. The time it takes for the light to return is used to calculate the distance the pulse traveled. The OTDR can also measure the amount of light reflected for each event, which can help identify issues such as questionable connection points, poor installation practices, and imperfections in the cable. Optical Power Meter (OPM) An optical power meter (OPM) is a device that measures the power of light signals in systems that use light to transmit data or power. It’s a vital tool for fiber optic technicians, as it can measure the power of fiber optic devices like cables, light sources, and lasers. It’s also used in telecommunications and laser manufacturing to ensure the safety and performance of optical systems.
